Hebrews 10: 24-25 says, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
This verse speaks on the importance of meeting together as believers. The New Testament is actually all about the importance of the church and the expectation of heathy church community. We know that God deeply values community and the benefits of it. Community provides encouragement, fellowship, accountability, companionship, a sense of feeling known and seen and its an opportunity for the body of Christ to be on display.
We all have those days that are emotionally draining, and it feels as if every personal sin struggle is being tempted that very day. We all have walked through hard seasons in our life, whether that’s with our children, our career, or experiencing a deep loss. The encouragement that we can experience within a Godly community is one of the most valuable gifts to receive as a follower of Christ. It’s important to be a part of a community that can hold us accountable when our perspective needs to shift or we need to be reminded that God‘s word communicates clearly that there is always an end to a season. Being apart of a Godly community can help us place ourselves in a constant environment of encouragement.
One of the biggest highlights of Jesus’ ministry within the gospels is His emphasis on fellowship. We see him breaking bread with his disciples, attending a wedding feast and feeding thousands of people a meal. God values the simplicity of partaking in a meal together. I don’t know about you, but when we have a chance to laugh, ask for advice, and just spend time with people in our current stage of life it fills my soul!
In order to truly experience the full fruit of a Godly community, we must desire honesty for the sake of our own growth. It’s so important for me to have friends that remind me when I’m relying on my own strength and push me towards abiding in Jesus. Or maybe I’m seeking poor council and I need someone to love me enough to tell me to seek the word of God instead of the opinion of man.
Whatever we may be walking through, there is a reason God values community and desires for His children to be apart of the church body. If you are not plugged into a consistent, healthy Godly community, find a bible study, church home, and opportunities to surround yourself with your brothers and sisters in Christ. God promises that we will benefit greatly from that investment.
